What? Navigating Change: a panel with Mel Duffield and Louise Dale

The pensions world is changing, and it needs to keep changing. It needs the thinking of a new generation. It needs the energy and voices of a more diverse group of people.

Sometimes it feels like it isn’t changing fast enough or doing enough to listen to those fresh voices. So come and get some practical tips from Mel and Louise who’ve made an impact through their energy, talents and determination. They’re changing the industry to be more inclusive and more creative. Their experiences tell the story of the state the industry has come from and where it needs to go - and what you can do to be a bigger part of it.

Plus, of course, this is a chance to make your own connections in the industry, with none of the pressure of feeling like everyone else in the room already knows someone or knows what they’re doing. Meet people in a similar position to you, people who are all on the same side and ready to help each other move up in pensions.

When we connect more, we have more opportunity, more value, more fun and we can drive the change the whole industry needs to become more effective.

Our panellists:

Louise Dale, Pensions Manager at Leonardo

Leonardo is a manufacturer with 7,000 employees operating in helicopters, electronics, defence and security systems. She is responsible for Leonardo’s award winning DC scheme, FuturePlanner (assets of £121m) as well as contributing to financial controls for Leonardo’s legacy DB schemes (assets of £2.5bn). Louise ensures the smooth running of FuturePlanner on behalf of the Trustee and is heavily involved in new initiatives and wider benefits offered by the Company. She also chairs Leonardo’s Gender Balance network group.

Her journey into the pensions world has been unconventional which gives her a unique perspective. Before joining Leonardo in January 2018, Louise was a chartered accountant running her own small practice from home. She has a BSc (Econ) in Accounting and Finance and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Her spare time is mostly taken up by her children, but when she has 5 minutes, she bakes a mean brownie!

Mel Duffield, Pensions Strategy Executive, USS | PLSA DC Council

Mel is the Pensions Strategy Executive for the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), the pension scheme for academics and related roles in the Higher Education Sector. Mel joined USS in 2015 and was instrumental in the design and implementation of USS Investment Builder, the new DC section of the hybrid scheme introduced in 2016, which was recently authorised as a Mastertrust by TPR. Mel currently has responsibility for strategy and insight, member experience, policy and proposition development, stakeholder engagement and member communications across the whole hybrid scheme, with c400,000 members and £68bn in assets across DB and DC.

Mel began her career in the civil service working as an economist in DWP, HM Treasury and the Department for Education prior to stints at the PLSA and PPI. Mel sits on the PLSA policy board, is a PPI Governor, and is the chair of the Cost Transparency Initiative (CTI). Mel has also been a serving magistrate since 2015.
